"You can look at
war as a massing of arms and matérial and troops, but
you can also see it as something else--as a delicate web of
interwoven choices made by human beings, made out of a certain
consciousness. The decision to order an attack, the choice
to obey or disobey an order, to fire or not to fire a weapon.
Armies and, indeed, any culture that supports them must convince
the people that all the decisions are made already, and they
have no choice. But that is never true." The Fifth
Sacred Thing" by Starhawk

Peace,
in the sense of the absence of war is of little value to someone
who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain
of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not
comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused
by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can
only last where human rights are respected, where the people
are fed and where individuals and nations are free -

"The choice is not

and nonexistence." Martin Luther

Dear
People,
I
am grateful for the abundance I witness in nature,
and for the flourishing of hopeful spirits. Admittedly
hopeful by nature, I remain so, and am buoyed by those
around me who continue to act with the intention to
share, strengthen, and work toward developing and
manifesting hopeful visions of a world filled with
peace, love and justice.
I
admit to having some long moments when I have felt
disturbed and weighted down by the violence of these
times, and yes, I have wanted to distance myself from
all of it. But, in the center of my being, I believe
that we have the capacity to create a loving sustainable
world, and that we each have some part to play toward
that end. With this in mind, I move forward doing
what I must to keep up with Green Dove, which is now
officially a non-profit corporation doing the 501C3
dance. Sadly, there will not be a print edition of
this Green Dove Peace Magazine due to lack of funds.
Solutions are being sought to remedy this problem.
Many
of those in positions of power, do not represent the
heart, mind and visions of the people. Thankfully,
there are many working to create a just, beautiful,
healthy, sustainable, and peace filled world. In Bloomington,
up in Indianapolis and across Indiana, there are many
individuals and groups actively working toward increasing
peace. Among them are the Unitarian Universalist Peace
and Justice Task Force, the Bloomington Peace Action
Coalition, Bloomington Muslim Dialog Group, and a
new arrival on the social activism scene, The Indianapolis
Nonviolent Action Coordinating Taskforce (INAC) whose
goal is to increase coordination and communication
between people working in Indiana for justice and
community empowerment.
This
issue, as in previous ones, we have some voices from
the local scene, and others from across the nation
and around the global community. We have articles
and many letters. Among them, Dr. Brittain on medical
marijuana, Arundhati Roy on Radio Now, The Military
Media by Robert Jensen, Denise Breeden-Ost on Mothers
Day, GMO News, Letter of Resignation by Paul Hawkens
from the Green Business Network, Next year in Mas¹Ha
By Starhawk, David Keppel letter to Senator Luger,
War Spending VS Education, Creating a Culture of Peace,
An Interview with Major Doug Rokke on depleted uranium
and many more articles and link connections.
We
are all on this road together, may we share our best
when we meet. Thanks again for whatever you do to
make peace in your home and the larger community.
It all matters.
Patricia
