Support Our Troops!

yellow curlicue ribbons
decorate tailgates of trucks
backdoors of vans, trunks of cars
"Support our Troops!"
redwhite'nblue signs in metal frames
on well kept yards demand
"Support our Troops!"
angry motorist screams at peace vigil
on corner of courthouse square
"Support our Troops!"
buttons, badges, t-shirts
country songs, church signs cry out
"Support our Troops!"
ears thunder with the words
eyes cry with the sentiment
hearts bleed for our troops
our sons and daughters
young people opting out
of hopelessness with promises of
comraderie, travel
college education on the G-I bill
reaching for their American dream in army fatigues
and combat boots
expendable fodder in this unnecessary war
built on lies, deceit, confusion
this unnecessary war on brothers and sisters of another culture
another language, another faith
unwinnable war, unsolicited occupation
unbearable deathtoll sucks our troops into quagmire
of middle eastern complexity, national sovereignty
suicide bombers and biggest gun on the block mentality
for what?
american freedom?
to stop terrorism?
to give Iraqis a better life?
idealism loses
its shine when dripping in oil

September 2004
1,000 faces displayed on church wall
1,000 pictures sidebysidebysidebyside
1,000 dead soldiers
"Support our Troops!"
Bring them home!
Bring them home now!

Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one.
